Bennington is home to 16,000 residences, and occupies 42.5 square miles. The town is home to the 306-foot tall Bennington Battle Monument, which is the tallest human-made structure in the state of Vermont. Other attractions include Bennington College, Robert Frost’s Grave, and the Vermont Arts Exchange. The town has ample access to natural resources as well as waterpower, and has a long history of manufacturing, primarily within wood processing. Bennington is also recognized nationally for its artisanal pottery, iron, and textiles. The town was chartered on January 3, 1749.
